I'm a 37 (OK, almost 38) year old dad. I was born in Lier, Belgium and attended the Antwerp Merchant Marine Academy. After graduating I sailed the seven seas as a navigator on various ships. I met my wife J., who was born in Calofornia, on a cruise ship a few years ago and we sailed together for a while. Soon after meeting, I was offered a job as a maritime pilot in the Port of Antwerp. J. took a chance on me and decided to move to Antwerp from the US. We've been living here for 7 years now. In 2010 our first child L. was born. He is just over 2.5 years old now. At the end of March this year our daughter R. was born.
Being a parent and a dad is never easy. Although European and American cultural heritage might look similar on the surface; deep down there are some differences that make life as a family sometimes more difficult, but also a lot more interesting. I decided to write a blog about raising a family, about being a dad, but also about the interesting and sometimes challenging aspects of being an international family.
